The perfect mix of traditional & modern: a mid-century modern home in the midwest gets an updated living room design by Scout & Nimble.
One of our favorite aspects of design is just how fluid it can be. Thatโs why we are so excited to share our latest project with you! This mesmerizing mid-century modern home in the Midwest features an open floor plan, exposed brick, and plenty of dreamy natural light. The great bones of this home made for the perfect canvas to design in.
BEFORE
Our clients had two requests when we began: a tufted leather sofa and to feature the vivid print by acclaimed photographer Slim Aarons. With this in mind, we created a living space that mixed our favorite parts of traditional and modern styles. As for the tufted leather sofa, we decided on the Chester Stationary Sofa in Malawi Tonga.
SHOP THE LOOK
The contrast of this rich, dark sofa against the light brick wall draws the eye in and up to the vibrant photograph. It might not be in the center of the room, like the Theodore Coffee Table, but it certainly is the center of attention in this awesome space.

Poolside Glamour print by Slim Aarons. We reserved using saturated color in the rest of the space to really let this piece shine above the leather Chester Sofa.
The living room opens directly onto the kitchen and to distinguish the two spaces in this open concept home, we used the Lefka Mist Rug, similar to the Anastasia Light Blue & Ivory. The perfect compliment to the light and airy rug is the Transitional 3-Seat Sofa.
Upholstered in Crypton Fabric, this sofa is prepared to handle any spill. Itโs comfortable, functional, and frames the space perfectly.

Our clientโs have such a versatile style, it was important that we brought that through in this living room. One way we did this was by using 3 different styles for seating.
From a traditional tufted leather sofa, to the clean-lined transitional sofa in Crypton, this living room goes to show that it pays to think outside the box when it comes to planning seating. Donโt be afraid to mix and match!

To make the space truly theirs, we took advantage of our clientโs impressive book collection. We scattered the volumes throughout the space and paired them with vases and some of our favorite Bone Styling Beads. Itโs these little personal details that make a house a home.
At the rooms center, clean lines & geometric shapes from the Theodore Coffee Table balance the natural textures from the porous vase and bone styling beads. The mixing of these modern and natural elements bring bring a sophisticated eclecticism into the space.
This handcrafted vase is our go-to for a statement centerpiece that draws your attention element in any room. The organic shaped ceramic vase with a pierced silhouette in a rustic, textured white glaze is available as small or large.
This cool, mid-century modern space was transformed into a welcoming, comfortable, mixed-modern living room and we know our clients and their guests will be able to kick back and relax in this space for years to come.
