December is a time of reflection, so we’d like to take the opportunity to celebrate your favorite top-ten trends of 2022. From over-grouted stone walls and dark wood tones to furniture-inspired kitchen islands and layered patterns, these trends embrace a vintage-inspired yet modern and bespoke approach to design.

Trends come and go, and while the word may trigger thoughts of fleeting fashions and preferences for some, for others it conjures up the idea of opportunity for development and change.

Whether trends transition into timeless or become cyclical celebrations of the past, we’d like to share with you this year’s most-loved interior design trends of 2022.

1. Dark Wood Tones

We’re continuing to see a resurgence of dark wood tones in place of the once very popular white oak.

Dark wood tones add such great warmth and depth to any space when featured in flooring, cabinets, and even furniture pieces.

No remodel in your future? An easy way to jump on this look is by bringing in furniture pieces with rich, dark finishes.

2. Two-Toned Cabinetry

As we’ve seen growing attention to detail throughout design in the last year, one noteworthy detail we’re paying close attention to is the two-toned cabinet.

In a kitchen, mudroom, or laundry room where the bottom cabinets take on a different shade or finish than those above, incorporating a contrasting color or complementary wood tone can add interest and a more dynamic experience.

3. Flush Mounts in Place of Recessed Lighting

Swapping recessed lighting for a simple flush mount is perhaps the easiest way to make your home more “on trend” right now.

This lighting style adds a certain je ne sais quoi — a truly 2022 modern moment that can be mixed into a variety of design styles throughout the home.

4. Layered Patterns

Carefully considered patterns pair together to make the whole space sing. 

Layering patterns is such a fun way to showcase the historical and bespoke feel of the arts & crafts revival taking hold right now.

This technique to designing your space is full of personality and interest. Heidi Caillier’s projects embody this style through her choice of wallpaper prints, upholstery patterns, and flooring treatments.

5. Furniture-Inspired Kitchen Islands

Lifting the bottom of the kitchen island off the floor has a huge impact on the look of the space as a whole.

Furniture-inspired kitchen islands feel more like a vintage prep table and less like built-in cabinetry, giving a more utilitarian feel.

Opting for this style of kitchen island provides the perfect opportunity to discover designer-favorite styles or bring in a vintage piece to your home.

6. Putty Paint Colors

A more contemporary approach to the all-white space, putty paint color choices for your favorite spaces feel a bit warmer and pairs well with the heritage luxe style we’re seeing on the rise.

The bonus? This is also an easy and inexpensive way to incorporate a new trend into your home’s design.

7. All Eyes on the Tub

We’ve been seeing more unique tubs all around — from a mix of stone materials to unique, custom silhouettes, even vintage-inspired bun feet.

8. Mixing Old and New

Many of the trends we’re seeing on the rise fall under this umbrella of taking a modern approach to mixing traditional design styles and sensibilities.

One way we’re seeing this is the combination of modern furniture with traditional architecture and styles.

Bringing curvy or geometric shapes into a space that’s also showcasing heritage-inspired pieces introduces a fresh and updated feel to any traditional-leaning design. 9. Over-Grouted Stone Walls

Something we’re seeing more and more of on our feeds is stone walls –– especially as an accent in the kitchen and living room.

We’re absolutely loving the texture this look brings to a space, especially over-grouted stone walls.

This look for stone walls is one of our favorite ways to bring nature into your interior design for more of an organic feel.

10. Show-Stopping Slabs

Unique marble & other natural stone slabs have been popular for a while, but they’re still scroll-stoppers for us, so they’re definitely a must-have on our list favorite 2022 trends.

This kind of statement, like here in Jake Arnold’s slab-marble shower with matching floor and tub, truly is a show stopper.
