Finding the right piece (or pieces) for the end of your bed essentially just comes down to combining your lifestyle and design preferences with a few simple guidelines for a perfect blend of functionality and style.

5 Pieces or Combinations of Furniture for the End of Your Bed

1. Bench or Pair of Ottomans

Make a stunning statement with a bench or pair of ottomans. This option also provides a spot for tieing your shoes or showcasing your favorite books and is also a great way to mix and match textures, materials, and prints for added interest in your space.

Be sure to choose pieces that are lower in height than your bed so they don’t interfere with the view of your room.

2. Accent Chairs

Featuring two accent chairs at the end of your bed is a perfect way to have a little fun with mixing textures, colors, and shapes, and with combining them with tables and ottomans for added functionality and comfort.

Adding a small table between your chairs introduces a touch of coziness as well as provides a place for your drink and candles. If space allows, you might be able to do a low ottoman or coffee table in front for additional seating. If you have kids, this can serve as a great retreat for them, or just for yourself.

When considering size, the back of the chairs can be higher than the top of the mattresses, but you want to avoid anything that has too high of a back that blocks or hinders the view of the bed.

3. Trunk

A trunk is an ideal piece for adding additional storage to your bedroom. With all of the wonderful options out there in various wood tones, mixed materials, and upholsteries, you can really get creative in combining these with your pre-existing pieces for an eye-catching blend of texture and color.

Trunks are another way to store unused pillows and throws, too. And, as you can see above, there are several styles available that double as seating, providing the perfect spot for tossing your favorite throw or sweater.

4. Small Sofa or Chaise

A small chaise or sofa can introduce a cozy or luxe element to your design, depending on the style you choose. Whatever your preference, this option also introduces a new place for you to relax in your bedroom being in bed.

You could also incorporate a small ottoman, footstool, or table with this option to accommodate for your belongings or to provide extra seating for your kids.

Again when considering size, you want the back to be in line with the mattress. Slightly taller is fine as long as the piece doesn’t hinder the view of the rest of your space.

5. Pair of Stools

A pair of stools, in contrast to using ottomans, can double not only as seating but also as little cushioned end tables you can style with your favorite books, throws, or even small trays.

Other Considerations When Choosing Furniture for the End of Your Bed

Consider your lifestyle.

Do you want or need something functional for this space, or would you rather have somewhere to relax in your room without being in bed? The goal you have for filling this space will help determine the approach you'd like to take for furnishing this area.

Seating

When you need a place to sit to put on your socks or tie your shoes, side-by-side stools or a bench, or even a chest, can provide a convenient and cozy place to do so. You can also use these pieces for your purse or your favorite blanket or sweater.

If you entertain guests often, choosing furniture that doubles as seating could make all the difference when you’re catering to extra company.

Storage

If you find whatever you place at the end of your bed tends to collect piles of clothes or garments, consider pieces that provide storage, like a chest or bench with storage.

This option is also great for storing linens, decorative/extra throws and pillows.

Personal Retreat

Sometimes you just need a getaway spot to relax or wind down, or a place where the kids can hang out. Adding accent chairs or a chaise or sofa with a side table and/or ottoman can provide that space and allow you to spend time in your personal sanctuary and relax without being in bed.

Consider your layout.

Space

Aim for walkways that are roughly 3 feet between furniture if possible. This helps to ensure you have plenty of room to maneuver around your room and also provides plenty of space for any furniture you may have placed on the wall opposite your bed, like a dresser or armoire.

Height

Avoid choosing chairs, sofas, or chaise lounges with high backs that might hinder the view of your room. Stick with pieces that don’t exceed the height of your bed. A little taller is fine, as long as it’s not cutting off visual access to the rest of your space.

Consider your style.

Shape

This is an opportunity for you to introduce something sculptural and make a statement with your bedroom design. Explore simple and sleek curves or bold, geometric shapes for that striking look.

Materials

From wood to fabric and everything in between, using a mix of materials creates a dynamic feel with your design by encouraging eye movement throughout your space. Play with different materials and finishes to see what works best with your other pieces.

Colors/Patterns

Use colors and patterns to create cohesion with the rest of your space. Consider hues and prints that bring out those pops of color in your palette.

Consider your other furnishings.

Whichever option you choose, it is ideal to have your pieces placed within the rug you are using, especially if the flooring is hardwood or tile. Your bedroom will feel the most inviting this way. This may mean you have to go up a size in rugs if your current rug won’t fit your pieces.

Elevate your bedroom with the perfect end-of-bed piece.

The bedroom is oftentimes pushed to the bottom of the list when it comes to decorating or refreshing the rooms in your home. With the end of the year approaching and a new one on its way, it's a perfect time to add a little something to polish off your space, and that area at the end of your bed is begging to be filled!
